Everything you need to
know about nitro drinks.

It's gonna to be quite a read, but trust me it's worth the time. So what's Nitrogen?

Nitrogen Gas (N2) is an inert gas which is colorless and odourless gas that forms about 78% of the earth's atmosphere. Nitrogen infused beverages was initially used in varieties of beers like porters and stouts, creating micro bubbles and gives the drink a thick and creamy texture.

The most recognizable was Guinness who pioneered this technology with their beers, creating the trademark cascading perfect pour and foamy head.

Since then, the beverage industry has caught on rapidly over the past few years. Baristas and shop owners are constantly striving to create new and unique drinks. Let’s explore one of the most popular nitro trends.

What is Nitro Coffee?

The coffee industry has changed rapidly over the years, and one of the most popular trends in the coffee industry is Nitro Coffee. As the name suggest, it’s nitrogen-infused coffee. Often made using cold brew coffee, nitro coffee is extremely smooth, low in acidity and usually comes with the signature reverse cascading effect, which is unique only to nitrogenated drinks.

Nitro coffee has some unique features that makes it healthier than regular coffee. Thanks to the long steeping hours of the cold brew process, it packs 30% more caffeine than regular coffee. Besides adding a smooth texture to the drink, it also helps reduce some of the bitterness and acidity of the coffee which makes it more palatable. So customers don't have to sweeten it with sugar or milk, thus having lower calories yet beneficial to coffee drinkers who have sensitive stomachs or are prone to heartburn and acid reflux.

Cafe’s usually categorize nitro coffee as a specialty or premium drink for a few reasons. There isn’t any way around it, creating nitrogen-infused cold brew is expensive. Regular cold brew is already much pricer than regular coffee because of the long brewing time and double the grounds. Not to mention the costly investment on the various equipment needed to infuse and dispense. Not to worry, we’ll discuss about how you can do it in a fraction of the price later.

This conventional system works by infusing nitrogen with the desired drink in a pressurized keg / tank, and chilled it in a kegerator before serving with a scout tap. This method is good when you serve a large amount of drinks in a short period of time.
